It is a Surf Life Saving requirement for all Nippers U/8 to U/14 to pass the *Club participation proficiency before they can join the Nipper Program. The Proficiency does not apply to U/6 & U/7 Nippers as they don’t participate in swimming activities. For U/8 to U/14 age groups, each year the children must complete the proficiency as the distances differ for each age group as below and are a requirement even where a child does not compete in water based events.
Surf Life Saving NSW, mandates two levels of Proficiency:
- Junior Participation (Club) Proficiency - This is required for competition in any Surf Life Saving Nipper program in NSW and must be completed prior to registration being finalised.
- Junior Competition Qualification - In addition to the Junior Participation Proficiency this is required for competition in any recognised carnival.
Our Club usually reserves a lane at Corrimal Pool prior to the start of the season so that proficiencies can be completed in the warm water. Anyone not able to attend at Corrimal Pool will be required to complete the proficiency at Woonona Pool. Please check the Club News section or calendar for dates and times. All assessments are supervised by a suitably qualified Club Official. The purpose of the run-swim-run is to test a child’s ability and confidence in the surf as opposed to the relative calm conditions of a pool and is completed in the presence of qualified lifesavers.
